Level 1: Meet the Characters
At the controller, we have Fumiya Tomozaki, our protagonist whose gaming skills are top-tier but social stats? Well, let’s just say he’s starting at the bottom. In walks Aoi Hinami, the combo of academic prowess and athletic finesse, alongside Minami Nanami, the friendly always 2nd track star with a hidden struggle.
Fuuka Kikuchi is a sweet quiet girl with an unsuspecting crush. The popular clique - Yuuzu Izumi, Hanabi “Tamo” Natsubayashi, along with Aoi and Minami add to the high school hierarchy. The queen bee Erika Konno that is the most popular of them all and has a little crush on Nakamura. While Shuuji Nakamura stands as collateral damage to losing Tackfam to Fumiya but makes many excuses thus creating a rivalry. Let’s not forget the sidekicks: Takahiro Mizusawa and Takei, who make up Nakamura’s support squad.
Level 2: Game On
Fumiya, known as Nanashi the top Tackfam player in Japan, decides to meet up with Noname, the number 2 ranked Tackfam player. When Noname turns out to be Aoi, it’s a clash of realities - the top player versus the top student. Disappointed to find her gaming idol is Fumiya, a loner cynic student in her class, Aoi flips the script. She challenges him to apply his gaming strategies to a bigger quest: real life. To start she decides to show Fumiya how she looks without makeup or fashion. Her makeover reveal drives the point home: it’s all about effort.
Their game’s ultimate goal? To be as happy with his offline life as Aoi is. So he must transform from zero to hero armed with life goals ranging from hairstyle upgrades to campaign managing – talk about a multi-level game!
Level 3: Side Quests and Strategy Guides
No makeover is complete without a new hairstyle, posture, and acknowledging the way one talks. From working on his posture to his conversation game, Fumiya tackles various “quests” to up his life skills. Aoi also creates specific goals for Fumiya. The first is to get a family member or friend to ask “Do you have a girlfriend” showing that he has made changes in his appearance or vibe. Like a small glow-up that people notice. Fumiya completes this task when his younger sister asks him if he has been reading a de-geekification book.
Before he could celebrate his small victory that task was replaced with a new and harder task to go somewhere alone with a girl from school that’s not Aoi. Funiya also has tasks to increase his “affection stats” specifically with Fuuka and help his high school popularity. With a midrange task to have a girlfriend before starting year 3 of high school, Aoi tasks him with talking to Yuuzu at least twice a day. This would allow him to raise affection with one girl which will increase affection stats, possessiveness with other girls, and popularity with guys. His grind pays off as Fuuka opens up about her secret novel-writing dreams and asks if he would read her book.
Aoi also wanted Fumiya to hear how he talks mumbled so she provided him with a recorder to listen to himself. Not all runs smoothly. Aoi had to step in to playfully make fun of Nakamura to stop an awkward moment between him, Minami, and Fumiya. Even though Aoi seemed to be a hero at that moment Fumiya found a folder on the recorder that contained a recording of Aoi testing out her playful insults. This reminds Fumiya that even the skilled Aoi practices and continues to increase her skills.
Level 4: Unexpected Turnabouts
But not all is smooth in this game; sometimes the hardest levels are the ones unplanned, like standing up for Nakamura against the queen bee Erika’s stings of disdain. Nakamura finally felt ready to have a rematch of Tackfam with Fumiya but kept losing over and over again. this time though he wasn’t making any excuses. This didn’t stop Erika from calling Nakamura lame and other names but Fumiya wasn’t going to let Nakamura’s hard work get insulted.
Later Fumiya is tasked with asking Minami if he could be her student council campaign manager. Aoi knew even with his help that Minami was not a threat. Aoi ends up winning the election and thus begins Minami’s downward spiral. We learn more about Minami and see her character growth when she realizes that she is tired of always being second best. So she decides to train night and day in track to go from second best to best and beat Aoi. The stress and strain caused her friends to begin to worry about her. She eventually eases up herself and Fumiya learns that even popular girls have boss battles they don’t always win.
Level 5: Personal Growth and Glitches
Romance is a tricky level, as Fumiya finds out. Despite not following through with asking Fuuka out after their movie date, the firework display with her marks a breakthrough. He ditches the rehearsed lines for authentic interactions, showing growth and According to Fuuka, it makes him easier to talk to.
While some characters are growing we see that Aoi is stuck in her ways. During an overnight BBQ with Nakamura, Takei, Takahiro, Minami, Aoi, and Fumiya. The group planned to bring together Nakamura and Yuuzu in hopes they would get closer to dating but that wasn’t the only love in the air. While Aoi and Fumiya are having a late-night conversation they hear someone approaching and Fumiya decides to hide. Turns out it was Takahiro who revealed his feelings for Aoi and how he’s tired of having this mask of perfection and cool. He asks her to be herself and she doesn’t. He then asks if she will ever take her mask off and be her authentic self but before she could answer Fumiya revealed that he was hiding and heard everything. Takahiro was ok with that but because of the interruption we never got to hear Aoi’s answer. Letting us see that she may not ever change.
Final Stage: Boss Fight and Beyond
As the season closes, Fumiya faces the ultimate boss: self-identity. He confronts Aoi on her very specific life coaching, choosing to play by his rules while appreciating her influence. At first, Aoi cut ties with Fumiya since he didn’t seem committed. Luckily their partnership isn’t game over, but the game evolved.
Bonus Levels: OVA Insights
The two OVAs provide a sweet aftertaste, highlighting Fuuka’s inner world and the backstory of Aoi’s squad. It’s like getting the secret coins hidden throughout the game.
Next Season: What’s the Next Move?
Fumiya’s journey has only just begun. With a job interview at the same karaoke bar that Takahiro works at and new personal quests, it’s clear that his character will continue to develop in unexpected ways.
“Bottom-Tier Character Fumiya” reminds us that with the right strategy and a bit of grinding, anyone can level up in life. All-in-all I really enjoyed this show. I am excited about season two but I’m also curious about what they will do in season two. I can’t wait to see If Aoi will finally be her true self around others and how will Fumiya navigate dating as his authentic self. I guess we will find out in January 2024 when season two releases.
