Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun Seasaon 1 Recap

The 7th Wonder

Determined to win his heart, Nene sets her sights on her crush, Minamoto. She decides to go to the girls bathroom, knock 3 times, and call for Hanako the schools 7th wonder. He agrees to help her but Instead of sparkling artifacts or wise advice, he hands her a dusty, tattered self-help book and tells her “Use your gardening skills.”

So with Hanako’s guidance, Nene dives into a whirlwind of romantic gestures. First up, she picks ripe, red tomatoes from her garden, eager to impress Minamoto. But when he frowns at the surprise offering left on his desk, the gesture backfires, leaving her scrambling for a new plan. Undeterred, she crafts cute bento boxes, that sadly also creeped him out.

The Bond

Before she is about to throw in the towel, she asks Hanako about a pouch he has that contains 2 matchmaking mermaid scales. Nene’s impatience leads to her swallowing one of the scales before Hanako can warn her. He tells her that, whoever consumes the mermaid scales will be cursed, in exchange for a very strong bond. Nene true to her persistent self, is willing to be cursed if it means Minamoto would reciprocate her feelings. But as she’s about to give Minamoto the other scale to swallow she realizes that she doesn’t even know anything about him. After coming to this realization she notices mermaid scales on her arm, begins transforming into a fish, and unwittingly ends up in a decorative fish tank!

Then, a menacing mermaid approaches, intent on claiming Nene as her servant. Just when all seems lost, Hanako bursts onto the scene, holding a knife to scare her off, saving her and solidifying their newfound connection. Let’s not forget that Hanako grants her wish to be human and not a fish but per his rules he takes payment of what he sees fit. So he makes her his assistant, swallows the other scale as payment, to help balance the new curse she has.

Her wish to have someone care for her will be granted because he will care for her since they’re bonded now. The same bond materialized him so she’s now able to touch him. Nene realizes that being Hanako’s assistant means cleaning bathrooms under Hanako’s watchful gaze.

Mokke

During a particular English class, her belongings mysteriously vanish one by one. Aoi warns Nene about Yousai yo-sai (aka Mokke) creatures that take your things but never look in their eyes or else they will harm you. Nene races to the old building, desperate to reclaim her lost items. Face to face with the culprit - a Mokke But before panic can set in, Hanako-kun arrives just in time, using his hakujoudai (spirits) to disperse the creature, revealing it to be just a misunderstood bunny-like spirit. Mokke never wanted to harm anyone but they have to align with their folklore or they will no longer exist. Since Hanako’s duty as a school 7th wonder is to monitor all apparitions and maintain order at the school he asks Nene to help spread new rumors that if they carry a piece of candy that will distract the Mokke and they won’t harm you.

Tension escalates further with the arrival of Kou, a student, and descendant of a family full of exorcists. Eager to cleanse the school of evil spirits, including Hanako, and is reminded of his grandmother’s warning of Hanako, the most evil spirit who keeps a knife with him, the same knife he used to kill someone when he was human. A fierce clash ignites between them, and Nene’s fierce loyalty to Hanako shines as she stands up for him, realizing how little she knows about his past and motivations. Hanako seals Kou’s spiritual staff because he doesn’t know how to use it right and is harming his hand each time he uses it.

The 2nd Wonder

Back in class, Aoi tells Nene about the 2nd wonder. It’s said that if you step on the 4th stair of the steps (Misaki stairs) by the art room you will be transported to the world of the dead, where you will be ripped into pieces and forgotten about. If you visit at twilight you’ll find the blood of the victims dripping from the 4th step. The next day Aoi’s missing and Nene asks other classmates and Aoi’s mother but no one remembers who she is, like she didn’t exist. Nene runs into a good-looking guy who secretly puts a little magic paper crane in her shirt sleeve and doesn’t notice.

Nene, Hanako, and Kou venture to the 4th step and get sucked into the other world in hopes to find Aoi and maintain order. Upon arrival, they are instructed to collect body parts to unlock doors that lead deeper into this world. During the battle, Kou is turned into a doll. To reduce the wonders’ power for some time, you must damage their yourshido. Nene learns that the 2nd wonder was trying to piece together a body for their past teacher, Misaki. So it’s no surprise that the 2nd wonder’s Yourshido was a pair of scissors that Misaki once used to cut her hair. Once destroyed we see that the 2nd wonder is actually an inari fox statue spirit named Yako.

Hanako gives Nene a kiss on the cheek and calls it a charm to make her feel better like a reward for her hard work helping with the 2nd wonder. The magic crane goes back to its owner and an unknown female and morphs into a kokujoudai (spirit).

Minamoto finds Kou on the rooftop with Nene and Hanako. Turns out Minamoto is Kou’s older brother, the same guy that Nene has a crush on. Privately Minamoto scolds Kou for hanging out with Hanako and not exercising more of the wonders in the school. Kou defends Hanako given that he has saved Kou numerous times but Minamoto doesn’t believe any apparitions are any good.

The 5th Wonder

Even though Nene swore to support and stay by Hanakos side she still finds herself curious about his background. The girl that the paper crane returned to tells Nene that if she wants to learn about Hanako she should visit the 5th Wonder. Letting curiosity take over, Nene goes to Aoi for more info. The 5th Wonder is a library that shows itself at 4pm. Aoi tells Nene that the books within hold meanings. The white books represent those who are living, the Black books represent those who have already passed, and the Red books Aoi warns that you are never supposed to open.

Kou and Nene venture to this library and guided by a butterfly nene finds and begins to read her own white book. tempted to know her future she begins to read the future section of her book which causes her book to turn red and bleed. Before she closed it she was able to find out Hanako’s real name, Yugi Amane. and of course, they are attacked by a monster and saved, again by Hanako. They meet Tsuchigomori, a science teacher, Kou’s homeroom teacher, and happens to be the 5th wonder the curator of the 4pm Bookstacks.

Hanako and Tsuchigomori get to talking and strategizing about the potential traitor among the 7 wonders. They agree that they must destroy each wonder’s yorishiro to temporarily weaken them, allowing them to figure out who the traitor is. Tsuchigomori reveals to Nene that his yorishiro is a moon rock that Yugi Amane gave to him, a boy whose dream extended all the way to space and is the only person who changed his future from what was written in his book in the 4pm Bookstacks. and Tsuchigomori was his homeroom teacher.

On the rooftop, Nene joyfully surprises Hanako with the freshly made donuts and tea that Kou and her baked. But Just as he starts to reveal his feelings towards her, chaos ensues when a paper crane morphs into a dark kokujoudai, creating an uproar. A familiar figure appears, stirring an emotional response within Hanako.

Mitsuba

Back in the girls’ bathroom, Kou brings a bound ghost, Mitsuba, whom he wishes to help find closure instead of exorcising. Hanako supports Kou’s empathetic decision. After jokes and conversations with Kou, Mitsuba hesitantly confesses his regrets, particularly his desire to recover a camera he donated to the photography club before his death. They go around the school while Mitsuba takes scenic images and reveals his deep-seated feelings of being forgotten, sharing a painful past concerning bullying.

Suddenly confronted by Yugi Tsukasa, who aggressively questions Mitsuba before committing an unspeakable act, killing him with bare hands. Kou tries to defend Mitsuba but finds himself powerless against the overwhelming force. Tsukasa states that he is capable of granting wishes to the dead, claiming that Mitsuba wished to be remembered and planned to do so by spreading rumors. However, this wish spirals out of control, leading to Mitsuba’s transformation into a monstrous entity consumed by madness.

Hyuuga Natsuhiko, an older boy, has extended an invitation to Nene, so she excitingly follows him out of her classroom. Before Nene can ask questions, Tsukasa douses her with water, instantly transforming her into a fish. Nene awakens and finds herself dressed differently and retrained in an unknown room. Sakura enters and introduces herself, explaining her ties with Tsukasa. Nene sees parallels between Hanako and Tsukasa while Tsukasa hints at the struggles in their relationships. Suddenly, Nene finds herself helpless as water begins to fill the space. Nene screams for help, only to realize Natsuhiko is also ensnared. Both can escape with the help of Mokke and their assistance with communication with Hanako.

This leads them to a room of doors. Natsuhiko vanishes into one of the doors after a near encounter with a monstrous creature, leaving Nene all alone in this new realm. Until she hears the familiar sound of the school’s dismissal music which she follows and goes through the door. In this realm, she sees Amane (Hanako’s past living self) who bolts away dropping a rocket keychain. Before Nene could go after him she is teleported back to Hanako’s bathroom thanks to their bond and his spirits, he was able to find her.

The 3rd Wonder

Nene shares unsettling pictures from a Gardening Club log with Minamoto Kou and Hanako, revealing strange arms appearing in the background, which distresses her. Kou engages the mysterious hands in an arm wrestling match and, after playfully interacting with them, they uncover a photo of Nene and Aoi, ending with the name “Mitsuba Sousuke.” Abruptly, a purple hand seizes Nene, pulling her into a mirror, and prompting a scream for help. Waking up in a foggy bathroom, Nene encounters Mitsuba, a boy with a vacant expression. He guides her into a room of mirrors called the Hell of Mirrors, yet he knows little about it. Nene learns he is trapped and seeks her aid to escape.

In the depths of the Hell of Mirrors realm, Nene strives to guide Mitsuba toward a reflection, only to uncover that he holds no memories of his life or death. Their only path to escape lies in destroying the wonder’s Yorishiro, but Aoi’s reflection informs them it’s located high above, accessible only to “cute people.” The atmosphere darkens as the 3rd Wonder, a bird-like creature, emerges, focused on collecting Nene’s soul. It mocks Mitsuba while minions rise to ensnare Nene. Mitsuba defends her courageously but gets swiftly overpowered and overwhelmed.

Feeling herself fading into oblivion Nene is taken aback when Yugi Tsukasa swiftly dispatches Number 3, one who had long been deemed invincible in their own boundaries. He extracts Number 3’s heart and reveals to Mitsuba that, to grow stronger, he must consume powerful apparitions. Meanwhile, Hanako and Minamoto Kou implore Tsuchigomori for support in reaching Number 3’s realm to rescue Nene. Despite Yako’s discontent, Hanako threatens her into acquiescing.

They teleport to the boundary and arrive at Number 3’s territory. Inside, they stumble upon Mitsuba being force-fed Number 3’s heart by Tsukasa, while Mitsuba expresses protest, and Nene bravely interrupts, demanding Tsukasa cease his actions. Tsukasa, compelled by frustration, tries to injure her and ultimately puts her to slumber. Faced with a decisive moment, Mitsuba chooses to embrace becoming the Third Wonder of the school, donning a dark jacket as he succumbs to newfound powers. As Mitsuba boasts of his newfound dominance as a Wonder, he warns Nene not to destroy the boundary.

Kou and Mitsuba meet again, and Kou can’t seem to sort out his complicated feelings towards Mitsuba for not remembering him. They try to save Mitsuba from his own newfound powers but are up against him and Tsukasa. In a split moment, Kou runs toward Mitsuba to try and save them and surprisingly activates his seal. Tsukasa has Mitsuba attack them but before falling rubble could injure Nene, Mitsuba uses his body to shield her. Immediately after, pink limbs ensnare the group, dragging them back through the mirror, as Mitsuba bids Nene farewell before they become unconscious once more.

During lunch with Aoi, Nene wrestles with her feelings for Hanako. Wondering if it would be better for her and Hanako if she became an apparition. Their meaningful chatter is interrupted when two fish in a puddle warn her about No. 7 and indicate that she carries a portion of the Mermaid within her. They urge her to contemplate severing ties with No. 7, giving her the Mermaid’s lifeblood, which would allow Nene to break the bond with Hanako and bond with the Mermaid instead. Also stating that she may become their princess.

Nene ultimately decides not to take the fish’s offer and break the bond with Hanako but this leads to the fish becoming desperate. They try to pull her into the depths of the sea and persuade her but Hanako saves Nene and threatens to turn them into sashimi, causing them to retreat for now. Alone with Nene, Hanako admits that he had a little brother and that he killed him. Nene pinky promises to stay by his side as his assistant and Hanako will decide if he will tell her everything.

The season ends with Kou vowing to get stronger to get Mitsuba back. Sakura scolds both Tsukasa and Natsuhiko, while Mitsuba wonders if it is ok for him to be there. Ending with Nene and Hanako holding hands after a cheerful greeting.
